RIM unwraps BlackBerry Torch 9850, 9860

RIM greatly widened its smartphone mix on Wednesday with two more BlackBerry 7 devices. The 9850 and 9860 are the first touch-only phones from RIM to get a high-resolution screen: either has a 480x800 LCD that finally makes them competitive with modern Android hardware and more comparable to the iPhone. The two likewise drop the often criticized click-down SurePress screen from the Storm and use multi-touch instead, much like theTorch 9810.
It slips in the 1.2GHz processor of the Bold 9900 and other BlackBerry 7 phones so far, and should be much faster than the three-year-old chip from the Storm line. Also like the Bold, the five-megapixel camera can now shoot 720p video. BlackBerry 7 contributes its own share by invoking hardware graphics boosts both for 3D and for the interface itself.

Data speeds revolve heavily around the network, with the 9850 running on CDMA for voice and EVDO for 3G while the 9860 uses GSM voice (on 2G) and considerably faster 14.4Mbps HSPA for 3G.

AT&T is one of the first US carriers to pick up the 9860 and plans to ship it sometime later in the year. Sprint is already known to be lining up behind the 9850. Canadian carriers and others worldwide should sign on to the 9860 as well with their own schedules coming soon.

Both new Torches should be RIM's most advanced phones for the year and in many ways represent the company's biggest hopes for returning to competition. BlackBerry Phone shipments have dropped rapidly in the past several months and, even with phones like the Torch 9810 now factored in, could drop to no more than 12.5 million units during the summer. The 9850 and 9860 are not just much more contemporary but also drop the Storm name, which many had commonly associated with RIM's struggling, first-generation touchscreen phones. Once pitched as the ultimate challenger to the iPhone, the Storm quickly tapered off in sales and went without any update last fall as RIM rethought the concept.

RIM, AT&T reveal BlackBerry Torch 9810 early

After unintentionally posting a product page early, AT&T and RIM together unveiled the second BlackBerry 7 device, the BlackBerry Torch 9810. It stands as a direct sequel to the original Torch that has the familiar vertical QWERTY slider, but with a much faster 1.2GHz processor and 720p video recording from the Bold 9900. While its design is very similar to the original Torch, it bumps the previously aging 3.25-inch display to a much sharper 640x480.
An extra speed boost comes from BlackBerry 7's support for a hardware graphics boost, which ramps up the interface speed itself and gives a Torch real 3D gaming support for the first time. Internet access is faster, too, as the 9810 runs on twice-as-fast 14.4Mbps HSPA for 3G. Owners get 8GB of storage built-in with a micro SDHC slot for more.

Despite the Bold 9900 having been unveiled as far back as May, the Torch 9810 may beat it to the market in the US. AT&T is expected to carry the slider BlackBerry in August, but it doesn't have a specific timeline for the 9900. Rogers in Canada is also known to be onside for the 9810 and should be joined by other carriers worldwide.

The cost of the phone still hasn't been set but, unofficially, is expected to run close to the industry-standard $200 on contract.

New Nokia Windows Phone 7 Smart Phone Coming Soon

Nokia, as expected, has announced partnership with Microsoft that would replace Nokia’s “burning platform” Symbian with Windows Phone 7.

Among them, one of the leaks claims to have exposed some of the Nokia Windows Phone 7concepts developed as a part of the partnership.
The shape of these handsets is somewhere between its recent N8 and C7 Symbian devices and there is, as usual for Nokia, a choice of sprightly colors.
Well, even if the images are just conceptual ones, the real outcome of the Nokia Microsoft partnership may be somewhere closer to it. In the partnership, Nokia will be contributing its expertise on developing user friendly hardware while Microsoft will be putting its efforts on the software front.

New iPlayer app launches on PS3

BBC iPlayer

Diehard Doctor Who fans have grown used to catching up on the latest episode of their favourite programme on their smartphone or iPad. But most viewers are set to swap their smartphone for the living room as theBBC predicts TV will dominate iPlayer catch-up within three years.
The BBC on Monday launched a new version of iPlayer for the TV, in a fresh attempt to woo an older generation of viewers.
The app – launching initially on the Sony PlayStation 3 games console, which has run the browser-based version of iPlayer since 2008 – has been built from scratch and includes new features such as viewer recommendations.
Daniel Danker, the BBC's general manager of programmes and on demand, said that iPlayer viewing on internet-connected TVs increased five fold in the six months to July, reaching 3.1m programme requests a month.
"We're going beyond the tech-savvy. We're making iPlayer easier to use for the mainstream audience," Danker said. "With today's announcement, we're transforming iPlayer in its most natural home."
He said the BBC aims to boost iPlayer viewing among the over 35s, to bring its catch-up audience broadly in line with traditional BBC demographics.
BBC fans made 157m programme requests on the iPlayer in June – a 34% rise on the same month last year – according to figures released last week.
The catch-up service's iPad app, which launched in February, is set to reach 1m downloads in coming days. About a third of iPad owners in the UK stream live TV on their device, which Danker attributes wholly to the iPlayer.
The BBC is also set to unveil a series of design changes to the online iPlayer, including a potential move away from its distinctive black and pink look.
Asked about the colour change, Danker said: "I'm not religious about colours … There will be an evolution in the look and feel – but it's evolutionary not revolutionary."
Most of the corporation's TV and radio content online – like channels, programmes, TV guide and archives – will be brought under the iPlayer umbrella over the coming year.
Ofcom last week said that one in 10 new TVs (about 1m) bought last year were internet connected – with average viewing time rising to four hours a day.
According to forecasts, almost 36m new-generation TVs will be installed in British homes by 2016.

Tata Sky launches app for iPhone

Tata Sky, has launched a Mobile Access app for the Apple's iOS platform covering the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

The 'Tata Sky Mobile Access' app enables iOS device users to access 4-day programming listings from their devices its self. Tata Sky has also introduced universal remote control functionality on iDevces through the app. To enable this feature, users will need to purchase an Infrared MP3 mobile accessory, which will plug into the audio jack of the iDevice (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch), which will facilitate signal exchange between multipledevices. Consumers will be able to map their own custom remote on the basis of the product they are using, as the app would map the remote control configuration.

Motorola Atrix = Phone + PC

motorola's 'atrix' smartphone in the laptop dock smartphone, engineered with enough processing power to convert via accessory docks into its own laptop, entertainment center, or personal computer.

How does it work?

In addition to the Android OS that powers the Atrix, it has an extra little piece of software inside that Motorola calls the “Webtop” (an amalgam of Web + desktop). This is essentially a little OS that launches when the Atrix is placed on its side and docked via its USB and HDMI ports into one of its two docks — the desktop/multimedia dock or the laptop dock. It’s not a full OS with a bunch of its own apps, but primarily a Firefox Web browser and a desktop environment for your Android apps.
Because it’s small and light, it also feels surprisingly fast. No doubt, that’s due in part to the fact that it’s running a dual core NVIDIA Tegra2 CPU, but software itself feels pretty efficient and well-designed. The UI looks like a simplified combo of Mac and Windows.
The big question I had was what happens to your phone while it’s docked? Can you still answer calls? Can you access your data and apps on the phone? The way Motorola has handled this is to give the phone its own Window and a shortcut on the launch bar at the bottom of the screen. Whenever you click the phone icon the software window appears with Atrix home screen. From there, you can anything you normally do with the phone, including making calls (using the speakerphone or a Bluetooth headset). You can also open Android apps from the phone Window and click a button to send them out to the desktop environment in full screen. If the apps have a landscape mode, then this works especially well because then it truly fills the screen. The mouse actions simply take the place of touch gestures in the UI.
The two photos below provide a look at the Atrix in its two PC docking modes as well as a peek at the Webtop UI. In the second photo, notice the phone window on the left that has the Atrix home screen.

The 4-inch smartphone is the first to utilize a dual-core processor, nvidia's tegra 2, on which the device runs android. 1GB of RAM supports the wifi and bluetooth ready device, which includes HDMI and USB ports. features include front and rear cameras and a biometric fingerprint reader as the power button.
The device features the high-quality QHD screen, as well as a 5-megapixel rear camera

By far the most innovative aspect of 'atrix' is its ready compatibility with a suite of accessory docks designed to let the device shift between functioning as a mobile phone and as a laptop or entertainment center. in all cases, the docks provide additional hardware, but is the 'atrix' itself that drives the computing experience.
The HD multimedia dock contains one HDMI and three USB ports, enabling the 'atrix' to be connected to a host of accessory devices.
attaching a keyboard, mouse, speakers, and monitor converts the smartphone for use as a PC, while connecting television displays and audio systems creates a home entertainment system.
Just 14mm thick, the motorola laptop dock has a battery, screen, keyboard, stereo speakers, and additional USB ports built directly into the device. like the multimedia dock, it can be connected to a larger monitor, external hard drives, or display screens to adapt its use.
a custom webtop application lets users interact with the phone from the left side of the screen, and browse in firefox, upload and download media, and use phone applications on the righthand side
